I first came across this in the book shop when I was looking for books for youngsters . I was deeply impressed by the look of the boy on the book cover. He looked so sad.

It was about a boy being left in a concentration camp in Bulgaria, a country in Eastern Europe. He had been there for twelve years and had experienced all the worst of life.  He was beaten , starved, threatened and put to hard labour .  He had seen death, betrayal and other human vice  However, there is always an angel be with him, Johannes, who was always there guarding him and even died for him

The story began with the dark night escape of David with the help of the labour camp officer who asked him to go all the way to the north to Denmark and give a sealed letter to the government there. This was later disclosed that the officer was the one who saved David’s mother when the family of three tried to stay there but found guilty of political subversion. The mother was told both her husband and son died.

The story gives a very detailed description of the loneliness and fear the young boy had suffered when he had to hide in the day but continued his journey in the night.. He couldn’t trust anyone and he even misunderstood the kind baker had tried to turn him in.. He was a boy who never smiled but later he began to learn that most people are good and we must try to trust each other. He prayed in church wherever he could find one and in the end he reached home safe and the moment his mother opened the door, he said, ‘I am David’ and the mother said, ‘I know you’re David, my son’.
